How to insert Library Symbols using the Command Bar.

In the Inspector panel, under the Symbol section, you’ll find a dropdown menu that either opens the Command Bar or a popover for replacing Symbols, depending on which option you’ve enabled.

Editing Library Symbols

To edit a Library Symbol, select an instance on the Canvas and choose one of the following options:

  • Head to Layer > Edit Symbol in the menu bar.
  • Press .
  • Click Edit in Library in the Inspector panel.

The first two options will open a dialog where you can choose to either edit the Symbol in its source Library or unlink the instance to create and edit a new local Symbol.

The third option opens the Library document and takes you straight to the Symbol Source you want to edit.

Options to edit a Library Symbol.

If the Symbol belongs to a third-party Library or you don’t have edit permissions for the Library document, you’ll only be able to unlink the instance from the Library.

If you’re using a Library as part of a team, take extra care when editing its Symbol Sources. Everyone using that Library will receive any changes you make.

You can star specific Library versions. Anyone using that Library will receive all changes included in the starred version. Changes in newer, unstarred versions won’t be available or shared with others — so you can continue working safely until you’re ready to share updates by creating a new starred version.
