Well, it makes sense if you need to save a bit of $$$. A monthly subscription costs $12 a month — but a yearly subscription for $120 is less, at just $10 a month.

    Common questions

    Billing and plans

    • Why is there no free plan?

With our Standard and Business plans, you can invite unlimited Viewers to your Workspace for free. Viewers can browse and comment on designs in their web browser, and even inspect files and download assets for developer handoff.

Beyond free Viewers, and besides our Education offer, we have no plans to offer an entirely free tier.

We want to operate in a way that’s sustainable. Our business model is simple — we sell our product at a fair price — and we’ve been profitable since day one. We believe this commitment to long-term sustainability is a responsibility to our customers, who can trust that we’ll continue to be here and support their work, as we have for more than 10 years.

Offering a free tier inevitably leads to unpaid costs (free tiers still require storage, bandwidth, support and more). As a result, most products with a free tier will gradually remove features or apply limitations in an effort to force customers to move to a paid tier. That doesn’t feel right to us.

Our focus is on adding value to our product with consistent improvements and new features, not finding ways to remove it for customers who we’ve enticed with a free tier.

We’re committed to helping students, teachers, and academic institutions with our Education offer – students and teachers are entitled to a Workspace with 1 Editor seat, and institutions are entitled to a Workspace with multiple seats – depending on requirements.

You can find out more and request your own on our Sketch for Education page.

    • Can I switch my subscription’s billing plan?

You can choose to switch your billing plan. The switch depends on the billing plan you’ve subscribed to and the billing cycle.

      Monthly subscriptions:

You may switch at any time. We recommend choosing our yearly billing plan as it will save you money over a 12-month period. Here’s how to:

      1. Go to Sketch, log in as an Admin and switch to your Workspace in the top-left corner — Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
      2. On the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > Billing to open the Billing page.
      3. Next to the Current Plan click on the Edit… button where you will be able to change to a yearly billing plan.

Please note that the credit card on file will be charged automatically once the plan is updated, which will initiate a new invoice and a new billing date.

      Yearly subscriptions:

You may change to the Monthly plan near the end of the billing cycle. Please contact our support team, and we’ll be happy to help you with your requirements.

If you are using a subscription purchased from the Mac App Store, you can change your subscription directly in the Mac App Store on your device. For more information, visit Apple Support.

    • What are my payment options?

For Standard plan subscription (Workspace) purchases, we offer credit or debit cards only. At this time, we do not have plans to implement other payment methods. Payments for our Standard plan are securely processed by Stripe.

For Mac-only license purchases, we offer different payment methods based on your location (country). Sketch license payments are managed by FastSpring.

If you need more flexibility in payment methods or terms, our Business plan can help. Please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss more options.

    General questions

    • Is Sketch only available as a subscription?

No. You can still get a Mac-only license for $120 yearly if you don’t need the web app and only want to use the Mac app to design. However, you’d need to save all your work locally and would miss out on loads of handy collaborative features.

      Get a license

A subscription on a yearly plan gets you a whole lot more for the same price: real-time collaboration in the Mac app, commenting, handoff, and a shared Workspace to bring all your people and documents together. That’s because we’ve evolved Sketch to be more than the Mac app. It’s now a complete platform for design and collaboration, combining the best native Mac editor with tools that work in any web browser.

    • Can I get a Mac-only license?

Absolutely! If you don’t need the web app and only want to design with the Mac app, you can still get a Mac-only license for $120 yearly.

      Get a license

Keep in mind that you’d need to save all your work locally. You’d also miss out on loads of handy collaborative features that you’d get at the same price of a yearly subscription, such as real-time collaboration in the Mac app, commenting, handoff in the web app, and a shared Workspace to bring all your people and documents together.

    • Do you offer any discounts for Nonprofit organizations?

We certainly do! If your organization qualifies, you can get 50% off the price of an annual subscription. Please get in touch to tell us a little about your organization and we’ll be happy to help.

    • Do you offer an educational program?

Yes! Please take a look at our Sketch for Education page for more information. You can find other details in our Education Plan help articles.

    • On which operating systems can I use Sketch?

To design and create files in Sketch, an Apple computer running macOS is required (see the Releases page for current versions supported). This is because the Mac app uses frameworks and technologies that are exclusive to macOS.

However, our web app is entirely browser-based and works across all major operating systems. This means developers, managers and other stakeholders can view Sketch documents in their browser, inspect elements and even download production-ready assets from designs.

We have also launched an iOS/iPadOS app that allows you to view documents on the go. You can find out more about this new feature here.

For now, we have no plans to launch the full Sketch platform for Windows, Linux, or other Apple operating systems like iPadOS.

    Mac-only licenses

    • I have a license. Can I switch to a subscription?

If you have an expired Mac-only license

You can switch to a subscription at any time, just follow these steps:

      1. Open your web browser and sign in to Sketch. If you don’t have an account, create one for free here and get started with your Workspace.
      2. On the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > Billing to open the Billing page.
      3. Click on the Set Up a Subscription button
      4. Choose a subscription plan (monthly or yearly)
      5. Continue to payment to complete the purchase, and you’re all set!

Once you switch to a subscription, there is no need to use your license key or renew your Mac-only license. Instead, you use the email and password you created in Step 1 to access Sketch.

If you have an active Mac-only license

Please get in touch with our support team — we’ll help you make the switch towards a subscription.

    Partners

    • How can I become an official Partner of Sketch?

All you need to do is send an email to partners@sketch.com. Our Partner Success team will follow up with you as soon as possible and help you become part of our Partner Community.

    Manage your account

    • What Roles and Access can I have?

When creating a Workspace, each user will be assigned a Role and Access.

You can have one of the following Roles:

      • Admin: has access to managing billing information and users (invite/remove/update) and full access to Workspace documents.
      • Member: cannot manage anything within the account.
      • Finance: can manage billing information and add/delete seats, but cannot manage (invite/remove/update) Workspace members or have access to documents.

You can have either Editor or Viewer Access:

      • Editor: can use the Mac App to create, edit and upload documents to a Workspace.
      • Viewer: does not have access to the Mac app but can view, inspect and comment on designs in the web app.

You can invite your clients or freelancers as Guests to specific documents in your Workspace, free of charge.

Any Workspace member can invite Guests to a document via Document Settings > Sharing in the web app, and can give each Guest permissions to either view, inspect, or edit that document.

Guests are free. Admins can view and remove Guests through Workspace Settings at any time.

Please note: Giving a Guest edit permissions doesn’t make them an Editor — they must be an Editor in another Workspace or have a valid license to use the Mac app to edit documents.

    • How can I cancel my trial or subscription?

An Admin can cancel your subscription at any time from the web app. Here’s how to:

      1. Go to Sketch, log in as an Admin and switch to your Workspace in the top-left corner — Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
      2. On the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > Billing to open the Billing page.
      3. If you added your billing details at sign up, click Cancel Subscription and confirm your choice in the window that will appear on your screen.

Note : If you did not add billing details at sign-up, you can either let the trial period automatically cancel on the end date or delete the Workspace. To delete the Workspace, on the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > General to open the Settings page. Scroll to the Delete Your Workspace button, and confirm your choice in the window that appears on your screen.

What happens when I cancel my subscription?

When you cancel your subscription, you can keep using Sketch until the end of the billing period — we’ll let you know when that is in the confirmation prompt. After that date, your documents will be in read-only mode, and you will still be able to download them. Any Editors within a Workspace won’t be able to open, edit or upload documents. You also won’t be able to add or edit members.

Will my documents stay in my Workspace forever?

After a certain period of time, we’ll permanently remove your documents and then eventually the Workspace itself; these actions cannot be undone. For more information, please refer to our Terms of Service.

What if I change my mind?

You can reactivate a cancelled subscription, so long as you have not deleted your account.

For purchases in Sketch from the Mac App Store, you can cancel a subscription directly in the Mac App Store on your device. For more information, visit Apple Support.

    • How can I add or remove Editors?

To add an Editor to your Workspace, please follow these steps:

      1. Go to Sketch, log in as an Admin and switch to your Workspace in the top-left corner — Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
      2. On the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > People to open the People page.
      3. Click on the Invite Members button and send an invitation to your new Editor. Once you invite a new editor, our system will charge the credit card on file.

Note: You can also add empty Editor seats. We’ll instantly add the new Editor seats to your Workspace and charge you pro-rata until the end of your billing cycle.

To remove an Editor from your Workspace, please follow these steps:

      1. Go to Sketch, log in as an Admin and switch to your Workspace in the top-left corner — Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
      2. On the bottom of the left sidebar, click on Settings > People to open the People page.
      3. Click on the three dots next to the member’s name you want to remove from your Workspace and click Remove from Workspace.

Important: When you remove an Editor from your Workspace, this will open an empty Editor seat, and all of their documents will remain in your Workspace.

Once you remove an Editor, if you don’t need an empty Editor seat, you need to Schedule a seat change to prevent incorrect renewal charges.

    • How does adding or removing Editors affect my bill?

When you make changes to Workspace members and roles, we’ll always tell you if and how it affects your bill, and ask for your confirmation. If you’re on a yearly plan, we’ll email you before your subscription renews, so you can make changes or cancel altogether.

Here’s how we calculate your bill:

      • The cost of your subscription is based on the number of Editor Seats in your Workspace.
      • Each Editor in your Workspace needs a seat, but you can also have unused seats.
      • When you remove or downgrade an Editor, this frees up a seat.
      • When you make someone an Editor, they take up a free seat.
      • If there are no free seats available, we’ll change you pro rata for a new seat.
      • You can remove empty seats, or purchase more, at any time.
      • Viewers in your workspace don’t count towards the cost of your subscription.

Editor Seats give you more control and predictability with your billing, even if the number of Editors in your Workspace changes. If you have freelancers joining and leaving your team regularly, for example, keeping a number of empty seats in your Workspace for them means your bill won’t fluctuate. It’s very useful if you have a set annual budget.

    Security and policies

    • Where does Sketch store my data?

Sketch and our payment providers are hosted on Amazon Web Services, which holds multiple certifications for its data centers — including ISO 27001 compliance, PCI Certification, and SOC2 Certification. Learn more at AWS Security and AWS Compliance.

Currently, we don’t offer an on-premise solution (private cloud), but we are working on providing this option in the future.

    • Who can see my Sketch documents?

In short, you always control who can see your documents and which documents they can see. Now let’s go into a bit more detail:

No one can access your documents outside your Workspace

Your Workspace documents are on the web, but they are not public unless you choose to make them public. This means that if someone has one of your document’s URL, they won’t be able to access it unless they are Members of your Workspace or you invite them as Guests to that specific document.

Inside your Workspace, you can control who sees what

Inside your Workspace all files are shared by default and all Workspace Members can see them. Workspace Members are Editors (people who can create files) or Viewers (people who can see documents on the Web app).

You can control access to documents by creating Project folders and setting these folders to be private. Only Members that are added to a private folder can see its contents.

You can also invite people as Guests. Guests have limited access because they are not Workspace Members. You need to invite Guests at a document level. This means that if you want a Guest to see two documents you’ll need to add that person to each document and in turn, that Guest will need to accept two invitations.

Guests are a useful way to add people from outside your team or organization.

You can make a file public by editing it’s share settings. Public files are accessible to anyone with the document link, but you can control if you allow file downloads, inspecting and commenting.
